60019 Bittern 03 Dec 09 KX arrival from Lincoln

A4 class 60019 arrives at Kings Cross whistling for Top Shed sadly gone without trace! The crew were looking very bright for the late hour. They had a week earlier worked the same engine through Cheltenham from Victoria and back en route to Gloucester. Today it was Lincoln and soon Cardiff. Its an interesting criss crossing of the UK for an East Coast A4 used to charging up and down the LNER from Edinburgh,Newcastle,York and Doncaster into Kings Cross. Who in the 1960s would have thought such a widespread pattern of rail routes would be regular runs for not only Bittern but Sir Nigel Gresley and also Union of South Africa! All we can hope is Mallard may be called to the evermore demanding thirst for mainline steam.
