We taught our budgerigar Duke how to fetch plastic chips, coins, and other objects. It was definitely more challenging and time consuming to train the budgie to fetch than for a larger parrot. This is because larger parrots will generally hold onto objects just for the hell of it but the budgie didn't know how to pick things up. We had to teach him how to pick the pieces up, how to hold them, and finally how to retrieve them to the proper receptacle. We decided to work on improving his fetch skills by getting him to fetch different objects and into different places. In this video he fetches coins and plastic pieces into a dish, cup, and finally into hand.
