FIRE DRILL ESSENTIAL FOR EFFECTIVE SAFETY






Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola's administration has adopted regular and intensive fire drill for all public servants in the state's public service. This is to inculcate awareness on fire safety in them as it is part of the preparation of the state's workforce in the event of fire outbreak while in office or at home. The drill, which is anchored by the Lagos State Fire and Safety Services, was kick started at the State House, Ikeja where staffs were taken through fire fighting and evacuation skills. The staffs of the Deputy Governor's Office, Public Service Office, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Housing were also drilled at their different offices. The drill which was undertaken in batches has also been extended to public servants in the Ministries of Home Affairs and Culture, Rural Development, Information & Strategy, Health, Works and Infrastructure including Mass Literacy Agency and Vehicle Inspection Office. They were taken through lessons in various aspects of fire fighting including triangle of combustion and triangle of extinction. The fire drill underscores the fact that the present administration prioritized the safety of its workforce, hence the training. Through this exercise, public servants are now better informed about fire fighting techniques that will help to nip fire disaster in the bud. Fireboats from the US Coast Guard continue to try and put out an oil rig fire, burning in the Gulf of Mexico. The fire started Tuesday night after an explosion on the rig. 11 workers remain missing. (April 22)
