International recovery efforts continue in Japan. Four weeks after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, Japan's National Police Agency has confirmed over 13100 fatalities, with more than 13500 people still listed as missing, leaving 82 children thus far in the worst-hit prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima, and Iwate without parents. As of Sunday, April 10, some 151000 people were staying in shelters across 18 prefectures, with more expected after a magnitude 6.6 quake hit on Monday evening, exactly one month after the disaster. A tsunami warning was issued but later lifted. This latest temblor, centered in Fukushima Prefecture, 50 kilometers southwest of the damaged nuclear plant, caused several fires to break out, with landslides that trapped four people in the city of Iwaki. Although police and firefighters were able to rescue all four, a 16-year-old girl had perished and the other three were seriously injured. Two more fatalities were reported after another nearby home was buried by mudslides, and a fatality was also confirmed in neighboring Ibaraki Prefecture. Yet another strong aftershock of magnitude-6.2 struck Tuesday morning, 77 kilometers southeast of Tokyo. Minutes later, a fire was reported at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
