For the spoonbill the wad area is its northernmost breeding ground. Colonies are expanding slowly. Spoonbills are migratory birds that winter in the south of Spain. In May the first arrivals return to the wad. Many types of geese also visit the wadden area. These are brents that prefer to live in mud-flats. Other geese such as the greylag goose, the white-fronted goose are more likely to be found in inland meadows. The brent hibernates in the wad. Most spend the long summer days in Siberia, Greenland and Spitsbergen. A small number stay in the wadden region.
