Old Silver Crater Mine.wmv

I was doing some reading online about some old abandoned mines in Ontario that were once sources for various radioactive materials. I had a free day so I thought that I would take my Geiger counter out and see if I could find the old Silver Crater Mine located between Bancroft and Cardiff several miles off the nearest small road. I had some rough latitude and longitude co-ordinates that I got off an old map (pre-GPS days) which ended up not really helping too much in the end. Essentially I noted where on Google Earth the nearest turnoff from the nearest road was and I stopped my car near there. What looked like a small road on Google earth was actually mostly an ATV and snowmobile trail which crossed the road where I parked my car. I just started following that. However there soon became several forks and turnoffs and I spent a few hours following various false turns. I eventually realized that my Android phone had a version of Google navigation on it and I used that to call up my location and give me a pretty good idea of where I was located in relation to the correct trail. It was a good idea that I did that because I had to walk a lot further than I had initially thought. Once the trail became fairly hard packed with some crushed rock in places and some obvious mica containing debris scattered about I knew that I must have been in the right area. I had my bird on my shoulder the whole time, who kept screeching but we didn't attract any attention, in fact we didn't see ...
