Standing Against the Wind - Hurricane Irene, August 27th, 2011

Stormchasing - Irene - southwest side eyewall - 71.8 mph gust between 4mins and 6mins on video As an amateur storm chaser, I went after Hurricane Irene as it made landfall on the North Carolina coast the morning of August 27th, 2011. My wife filmed this video as I stood at a boat ramp on the east side of the Hwy 70 bridge crossing Bogue Sound from Morehead City, NC to Beaufort, NC. Time was between 10:14am and 10:21am. Hurricane Irene made landfall about 12 miles to the east of this location just 2.5 hours prior to this video and we were here as the southwest side of the eye wall was passing. Winds gradually increased from around a 30mph 1 minute average to about 55mph average in the 30 minutes we were here. The strongest wind gust measured was 71.8 mph using a Kestrel 1000 anemometer.
Video Rating: 4 / 5

Horizon Wings Raptor Rehabilitation and Education visited King/Robinson Magnet School in New Haven on June 18. Mary-Beth Kaeser and Jeanne Wadsworth brought an American kestrel, a broad-winged hawk, a peregrine falcon, and a great-horned owl to show the school's students. The program was sponsored by Menunkatuck Audubon Society as part of its adoption of King/Robinson.
