The Great Britain III: 6201 & 60019 at speed, 14/4/10

April 14th was the final day of the extravagant Great Britain III railtour. That piece of Stanier elegance 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' is seen near milepost 5 north of York and later, 60019 'Bittern', running with two tenders, creates a stunning image as she roars along the East Coast Main Line between York and Doncaster at Balne, heading for King's Cross. The 'A4' travelled from York via Church Fenton and Milford so only gained the ECML at Hambleton Jn but the footplate crew, entering into the spirit of the last leg of a round Britain trip, had the streamliner working hard up to the 75 official limit. It made for wonderful viewing!

Steam hauled charter trains near York - 21st April 2012
Colton, Copmanthorpe & Shipton by Beningbrough, Yorkshire. Saturday 21st April 2012. Loco's featured: LMS "Duchess" Class Pacific 4-6-2 No. 46233 "Duchess of Sutherland", LNER A4 Class Pacific 4-6-2 No. 4464 "Bittern" & BR "Britannia" Class Pacific 4-6-2 No. 70013 "Oliver Cromwell". A trip out near York to see 3 steam loco's on 2 charter trains. First, at an overbridge about a mile south of Colton Junction, 46233 speeds towards York on 1Z82 Kettering to Scarborough "The Yorkshire Coronation", running about 25 minutes late due to a points failure around Milford. Next, after being diverted via Sherburn in Elmet due to early running, 4464 "Bittern" powers past the same location on 1Z20 London Kings Cross to Edinburgh "The Great Britain V". Next, at a wet Shipton by Beningbrough, 70013 storms past on the fast line, continuing "The Great Britain V" on from York to Edinburgh. Lastly, a bit of bad luck at Copmanthorpe, as 46233 passes on the return from Scarborough, a CrossCountry Voyager running parallel overtakes just at the wrong moment!
